Tameside World Cup Winners Triple Statue

by Sir Geoff Hurst

Born and raised in Denton, Sir Geoff, the only man to have scored three goals in a World Cup final came back to his roots in January 2011 and travelled to the Roy Oldham Sports Village, off Richmond Street in Ashton-under-Lyne, to see the bronze celebrating another remarkable hat-trick for himself. On seeing the sculpture for the first time, Sir Geoff said:

"It's smashing. I'm very privileged, very honoured and flattered. It’s a great idea to have a statue of all the World Cup winners from the Tameside borough all together.

I suppose it proves anything is possible in life."

Jimmy Armfield

Jimmy Armfield was born in Denton in 1935 and was captain of England before Bobby Moore. Jimmy conducted the official first reveal of the 21ft bronze monument in December 2010.
